Constituintes químicos: mucilagem (3%); saponosideos triterpênicos: verbascosaponosídeo; carotenoides: alfa-croceína; flavonoides: hesperosídeo, verbascosídeo; traços de óleo essencial; taninos; glucosídeos iridoides: aucubosídeo, harpagosídeo, harpagídeo.

Propriedades medicinais: antialérgico, antiinflamatório, antitussígeno, balsâmico (expectorante), demulcente, diurético, emoliente, expectorante, sedativa.

Indicações: afecções respiratórias infecciosas e alérgicas: resfriado, gripe, amigdalite, faringite, rinite, bronquite, asma; diarréia, tosse.
Popularmente: anti-reumática.
Tópicamente: blefaroconjuntivite, dermatite, queimadura, prurido, furúnculo, escoriações, hemorróidas.

Parte utilizada: flores, folhas e raízes.

Contra-indicações/cuidados: os estames das folhas podem provocar irritação da faringe.

Modo de usar:
- Infusão de flores: uma colher de sopa por 200 ml de água. Deixar por 10 minutos, coar em tecido fino (pois os estames podem provocar irritação na faringe). 3 vezes ao dia, antes das refeições.
- Decocção concentrada: 80 a 100 g de flores e folhas por litro de água. Ferver 10 minutos coar em filtro de papel: gargarejos, banhos oculares, lavagem (externa), compressas.
- Cataplasmas de folhas: em dermatites, queimaduras, furúnculos.
